There is a file on the web server in the root (top level) called wp-config.php. However, you do need some technical knowledge and it is not for novices. There is a way to limit the number of revisions that WordPress stores and this can help to prevent it from becoming too bloated. Backups also take longer to complete and they require more storage space.Īs a website grows older and more posts are added and edited, it becomes more bloated with old copies of posts. In extreme cases this can result in databases that are bloated and it can reduce the performance of your website.
Storing multiple copies of posts makes the database in which they are stored bigger. This could be a life-saver if you have made disastrous changes to a post and want to revert to a previous one. The changes are highlighted in red (old version) and green (new version).ĭrag the slider at the top of the page to browse the revisions and click the big blue button to restore a revision. Two revisions are shown at a time and on the right is the latest version and on the left is the previous one. To view and restore the revisions, click the Browse link. It tells you the number of revisions that have been stored. Open a post in the WordPress editor and look at the Publish box in the top right corner. For example, if you made some changes, but then decided they were not very good after all, you could restore a previous version instead of having to recreate it all over again. The advantage of storing revisions is that you can return to a previous version of the post. In fact, any page you have ever edited, ever! Advantages of WordPress revisions This means that there are multiple copies of many of the pages on your website. Many posts can have revisions and there can be many revisions for a post.

If you return to the post and edit it, make some changes, then update it, the new version is published, but a copy of the old version is kept as a revision.Įvery time you edit and update a post, the old one is saved as another revision. Sometimes after software updates, preferences get “reset” so it is good to understand how to do-it-yourself even if if you want your webmaster to set up your WordPress page view. WordPress allows each user to arrange the edit window for both pages and posts per their preference. The first part of the article explains how to show / hide edit boxes on your edit page view. If you can already see the revisions box on your edit view, skip section “How to: delete post and page revisions”. I’m sad about it since some clients cyclically revise content and causes more revisions to be saved then need be.ĭebwork clients can delete revisions to keep their sites smaller for backups, and there are some claims that loading time is faster. There are WordPress settings and plugins ( Optimize Database after Deleting Revisions) that will delete “all revisions” prior to a certain date, but not a plugin where you can choose which revision to delete. 2019 update: Thin Out Revisions plugin discussed here has not been tested since version 4.2 so I can no longer recommend it.
